Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program.

He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary,

2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the Program,

3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,

4.) That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and,

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to "put away," you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent "Trust" fund and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the
Democratically-controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, (with Al Gore casting the "tie-breaking" deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the U.S.)

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?

A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. (Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!)

Then, after all of the lying, thieving and violation of the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

Who do you trust?!

Although I don't agree with all the things that have been changed in SS since it's founding, it's not lying, thieving or a violation, it's evolution of a program. SS was put in place to allow the general public to be taken care of in the elder age as it was recognized by Roosevelt that the US was (and it still is today) way behind in social programs for the elderly. Most of us liberals aren't against further evolution of the program (for example, I don't think anyone sees it just that a person moves here and starts collecting, although I don't know how accurate that is), we're against the complete deletion of one of the few social programs for the elderly in our country. Don't forget that SS won't necessarily benefit the rich, it's meant to help the everyday man and you can't tell me that's a coincidence after watching this leadership pander to its wealthy friends and companies. Talk about alliagance, our president would never back this program if it was detrimental to his wealthy buddies.

"SS was put in place to allow the general public to be taken care of in the elder age" = FALSE!!!

SS was put into place to take provide basic needs to the elderly that could not provide themselves with what they needed to survive after they could no longer work. Very important because the Great Depression caused this demographic to rapidly increase.

The democrats took a promise that Roosevelt made and instead allowed it to be turned into a governmentally controlled retirement program for and poor. Nothing is more dangerous than to rely on someone else (especially the government) to provide you with basic needs. What next...lay our guns at their feet for the promise of safety?! Our forefathers would be rolling over in their graves, then waking from the dead and bit*h slapping liberals for allowing their dream for this great country to slide so far off course!!!

To clear up my stance on the issue...I do not support Bush's plan to save SS. Mostly because it is by far the best plan I have heard and their is a chance it would work. SS MUST come to an end and the best way to do that is to allow the Democrats to drag it to it's death with their plan to decrease benefits, increase taxes, possibly increase retirement age; all in a feable effort to delay the inevitable. It WILL fail...just as all programs that the government touches do (public education, healthcare, etc.) Private Organizations have a much higher success rate because their survival and success depends on it. Private organizations also give back far more to charity; ie. McDonalds, Wal-Mart, etc.

I will accept the democrats plan and suffer miserably with the rest of the American public for the good of the country...for I know the quickest path to the end of SS is in their hands!!!

You think McDs and Wal-Mart are good for this country?

All other successful countried (see most of Northern Europe) have such social plans, free education all the way through college, free healthcare, plans that resemble social security, etc... and have been very successful doing it. In fact, most of the progressive education and medical procedures have come out of such programs. If we were to combine our private pharmaceutical companies with the social education and healthcare available to everyone else we could truly do something great for our people.

The general public of this country, due to how poorly it is run, cannot provide for themselves when they're elderly and unable to work. I agree with you that it was created for those people. Unfortunately those people are everyone except for the top 1% financially.

Wal-Mart and McDonalds have contributed more money to charities in this country than any liberal organization ever has. Liberal organizations like Ford donate far more money to liberal political groups such as than any charity. (Crazy too since Henry Ford was a staunch conservative!) The only charity that liberals support is FORCED CHARITY through TAXATION!!!

"All other successful countried (see most of Northern Europe) have such social plans, free education all the way through college, free healthcare, plans that resemble social security, etc... and have been very successful doing it." ---It's called the "Brain Drain" Johnny. All of the greatest minds and entrepreneurs move out of Europe and Canada to the US where they won't have a cap put on their success like the socialist countries they come from. Ex.-The Canadian government provides free education for Canadians who wish to become doctors BUT ONLY AFTER signing an agreement to stay in Canada and practice there for a certain number of years. The Canadian government stopped covering certain medical procedures (with more to come) because the public healthcare system their is failing. Sound familiar? Failing SS in US = Benefit Cuts and Taxation Hikes!!! have to be put on a waiting list for simple procedures such as hip replacements with a wait of up to four years. Where do people go to get their Medical procedures done? To the US of course.

Need on, straight from a Canadian Doctor:

National Healthcare in Canada

"many of our best doctors moved to the United States, where government was not going to limit the amount of money they could earn."

"The patient to doctor ratio varies from 2,000 to 4,000 patients per doctor, depending on geographical location. And many tests and procedures are beginning to be de-listed; meaning that the public healthcare system will no longer pay for them. Among these are items such as PSA examinations, which is used to screen for prostate cancer in men, physiotherapy or chiropractic treatments, certain dermatological procedures, such as the removal of skin growths and eye examinations."

"Anyone without a family physician is forced to attend a soviet-style walk-in clinic to receive routine medical care. As transient physicians staff these clinics, there is no relationship that develops between the doctor and his patients and items such as annual physical examinations are not available in these clinics."

"Prior to his appointment with the surgeon, the patient had to be referred in writing by his family doctor, which usually takes from four to six weeks. After the initial visit, the surgeon likely requested an MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging procedure to determine the severity of the problem. Getting an MRI in Canada can take up to six months, although many Canadians choose to cross the border into the U.S. where they can get it next day for about $450.
After the MRI, the results of which can take as long as six to eight weeks to get back to the doctor, the patient has to make another appointment with the surgeon to find out if the procedure is warranted. From there an appointment is made, which usually takes two to three months. So from the time that one is aware of a serious problem, such a herniated vertebral disc until the time, the problem is actually dealt with, as much as a whole year can pass.
Other procedures can take longer, as in the case of hip or knee replacements, which can take three to four years of waiting."

"Those Canadians who can afford it (including, by the way Paul Martin, our Prime Minister) will get their medical treatment at private clinics in the U.S. to avoid waiting."

"From where I sit, the U.S. healthcare system looks pretty good. Yes, it’s expensive, but the facilities are in place to provide care in a timely fashion. Those unable to afford medical treatment can still receive treatment provided at charity or county hospitals.
The Canadian healthcare system is currently threatening to collapse of its own inertia. Yes, it’s a good system we have here in Canada, so long as you make sure you never get sick."

As for Social Security...what do you mean that only the top 1% can afford to take care of their basic needs after they are too old to work? I'm not even close to the top 1% and I'm putting away money into a Roth IRA and plan on taking care of myself. I'll have to...because thank the Lord above...Social Security WILL fail before I retire. And I am glad it will.

The top 1% currently fund everyone elses retirement. That's fine if they chose to donate to a charity (like Wal-Mart and Mc'D's do) but forcing charity is just plain WRONG!!! The government is FAR TOO involved in this country that was founded to escape a previous government that had their hand in too many pockets and that like to tell people they couldn't pray the way they wanted too! If you think I want to see the US slip back to those days...think again! ;-)

So, you're saying that our system, which is based on ensuring $ is not capped, is not only leading to: the dissolution of family as both parents need to work and don't spend time with their children, the evolution of greedy doctors who no longer care about their patients but rather $, but it is also enticing away docs from other countries thus ruining their systems as well. Long live Capitalism :)

I think Exxon donated a lot of money to charity too. They must be good people that care about the less fortunate, that's not just politics.

Pros and Cons of each system my friend. Each have their negative impacts, but only one leads to the downfall of the country.

And by the this Capitalist are free to choose how much time you want to put into work and getting ahead and how much you want to balance with spending time with family.

Kind of nice to have options! ;-)

Hey B2, This is BN, figure it out.

I mostly agree with where you're coming from. putting artificial caps on people's growth over time does nothing but piss everyone off (although for short periods of time, security can be a good thing). None of us really grow up despite all of society's best efforts to tell us to do so. What did you do when your parents tried to run your life and tell you how to live it as a teenager?

Same thing as I did, and EVERYONE else did, you rebelled. Just like the original immigrants to this country rebelled when we came here. Our country was built on that rebellion, that independence.

When governments start dictating to the general populace what to do with their life, you're inherently having another parent tell you what to do. Sure you've got people who need to listen (there are stupid people everywhere) but most people with an ounce of heart and self-reliance would rather make it on their own.

Having said all of that, having a safety net is a wonderful thing. I see no reason not to have some sort of government intervention in extreme, or maybe even some not so extreme cases. The line on that is awful hard to determine. I know you're happy to have your parents there in case all hell breaks loose the same way i am. Having said that, the government is NOT my parents and in most cases doesn't give a crap about me as an individual. I tend to lean republican big time, i just don't qualify myself as such.

Only one system leads to the downfall of the country? Socialism is the principal system in some of the most successfull Northern European countries today!

Down-falls of each system.... my efforts are toward eliminating some of the down-falls of Capitalism by encorporating Socialism. The two don't need to be exclusive.

I too like the above post, a lot less extreme than most posted on this site :)

Liberals (and others who LOVE socialism) envision a place where everyone looks out for one another. A place where everyone is concerned about the environment, and nature and wildlife. A place where family comes first and there is PLENTY of family time. A place where children are raised by the actual parents. A place where everyone works hard and no one has to worry about slipping through the cracks or not having someone there to help them through the tough times! A place where crime is low and education is a high priority. A place where elders are respected and looked after. A place where no doctors turn away the needy. Where housing is affordable and inflation hasn't destroyed the cost of living. Where schools are great!

Interestingly enough...It's the CONSERVATIVES, out in the "Red States" that live that life EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! (Only they live this dream without the negative impact of BIG GOVERNMENT interfering in everyday life, or a political system that destroy the will to succeed or promotes laziness and leaching off of others.) Now are you starting to see why us Conservatives like life as it is? We are already living your dreams...without the negative impacts of socialism!!!

It's the liberals that are packed into the smog filled big city holes full of polution and crime and people so caught up in there selfish corporate "dog-eat-dog" worlds to give a damn about fellow human beings. They complain about smog but still drive cars, they complain about corporations but still drink coffee and eat fast food, and go to sporting events and music concerts! They toll the bell of socialism but look the other way when they have the opportunity to give to charity. They don't want to help those "filthy bums", they just want to stick it to the rich, mostly out of jealousy! They don't want to work hard to make this world/country a better place. They just want to do enough to get by in life and enjoy life, even if that means living off of those among them that DO work hard to contribute to the betterment of society. They condemn tobacco corporations but smoke anyway, they condemn alcohol corporations but drink alcohol anyway, they condemn the media but watch television/movies and read up on Hollywood EVERY SINGLE chance they get! They condemn the wealthy but purchase overpriced homes and cars instead living the modest lives they desire others to live. They golf and buy all of the latest gadgets. They hate their neighbors for this, that and everything in between. They have neighbors that hate them for lacking the same common courtesy that their neighbors lack in showing them. They wear designer suits and clothes and play the stock market/lotto instead of living modestly (or even comfortably) and donating the rest to charity. Maybe they desire government interference because they lack the will-power to help others on their own?! They defend the habitually lazy among them as "down on their luck". They litter and complain they need more space and the grass is always greener. They dream of nature and a beautiful environment but live like sardines and have never even seen "REAL" nature, yet alone no how it works or how to live off of it. They couldn't survive without the modern conveniences handed to them by the corporations they HATE!!! They call themselves tolerant but hate Christians and Conservatives with a passion! They seek peace and tranquility, but instead honk, curse and flip/cut each other off in traffic. They sit in traffic for so long or spend so much time in their office cubicles that their family spends more time with their nanny than with them. A family meal consists of drive through happy-meals on the way to daycare because both parents are working. Where schools are overcrowded and underbudgeted. Where it's easier to make a buck selling drugs in a gang than working a summer job and gaining experience and saving money to purchase your first car and put yourself through college. A place where it isn't even safe for children to play outside or spend time with neighbors.

The list goes on and on my friends. You know...for as much time as liberals spend whining about our current system and praising Karl Marx...they just as well pack it all up and move out to the "Red States" where their dreams are already a reality.
Wait...WHAT AM I SAYING????!!!!...Forget was all just crazy talk. It sucks out here. We're all just hicks with nothing to do! You should ignore us and forget we exist. We just a bunch of bible thumping, Bush-Kool-Aid drinking, savages that live among the natives without the wonders of modern technology. If fact...I didn't even write this...someone else I know did. He lives in San Francisco and smokes weed as a hobby! In fact...I paid him to write this for me with some of the crack I found on the streets of NY! ;-)

Do you believe what you're saying?

B2 said...

Of Course!!! I love life here in the United States. The only thing I would change is to have LESS government interference in our lives and a little MORE trust in the good of human nature. At least I trust the good human nature of conservatives!!! ;-)

Anonymous said...

The San Fran weed smoker and the NY crack-head? Could you generalize a little more? Good human nature of conservatives? Are you kidding?

B2 said...

I never said EVERYONE in San Fran smokes week or EVERYONE in NY is a crack-head. I'm willing to bet I could find one of each in each location.

Good human nature of conservatives...COULDN'T BE MORE SERIOUS!!!
