According to the New York Post, a secret U. S. program has released a number of terrorists over the past several years from a military prison in Afghanistan. It’s not big deal though, so don’t worry. The government made sure that those who were released had promised (cross their hearts and hope to die, stick a needle in their eye) to give up violence.
I feel better already, don’t you? After all it is all about what you say, not what you do, right?
This has been tried before and unfortunately it failed miserably. A number of former Guantanamo Bay detainees were released after such promises and the results were that they were right back on the battlefield.
Barack Obama and his administration is willing to think they know better than anyone else and is ready to try again, demonstrating they don’t have any wisdom at all. They arrogantly set a deadline to remove all U. S. troops by 2014, even though we know the troops will not be coming home to America.
When you do this, you then make the releasing of prisoners almost necessary and thus you sacrifice national security.
While the goal is “to quell violence,” one has to wonder how much stock you can put in the word of those who have been targeting U. S. troops to kill them. On top of that, what about those who have been implicated in orchestrating or have said that they were targeting American citizens?
One official in a story put out by the Washington Post said:
Everyone agrees they are guilty of what they have done and should remain in detention. Everyone agrees that these are bad guys. But the benefits outweigh the risks. How there is a benefit to releasing guilty terrorists is anyone’s guess. The benefit to bringing troops home is easy to see. We need them here to protect us from a government that oversteps its bounds. The releasing of terrorists though only puts Americans at risk.
It seems the Obama administration is willing to release those who have targeted Americans upon the sole basis of them promising not to do it again. Sometimes it makes you wonder if those who lead our nation have any common sense about them at all.
